November - Narrowing the distance
As we mark Remembrance Day, especially to contemplate the soldiers with 'no known grave', it is of note that Australia's critical engagement on the Western Front in the First World War involved not only army personnel but also three flying squadrons.
The men of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) who returned home contributed significantly to Australian civil aviation. These men were involved in activities ranging from laying out high standards for civil aviation, to greatly reducing the time travelled from England to Australia, to establishing what later became QANTAS and providing the charter for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Australian aviatrices also met great challenges. Freda Thompson was the first Australian woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1934.
The consequences of adapting to adversity, with the subsequent travel and cultural exchange, have helped raise a consciousness for Australians about distance and our relationships in the world.
