September - Desert art movement

September sees the annual Desert Mob celebrations with exhibitions and events in Alice Springs (Northern Territory) through to 18 October 2009.

The phenomenon that is desert art had its beginnings in the Papunya Tula western desert art movement. This movement has been described as one of the greatest art movements of the twentieth century.

It is a stark reminder of the fact that 70% of mainland Australia is classed as arid or semi-arid; 35% is effectively desert; and 18% is officially designated desert (GeoScience Australia).

Early desert exploration and communication was largely dependent upon camels and cameleers, recruited from Afghanistan, Egypt, Persia, Turkey and the Punjab. From the 1860s to the 1900s, these 'Afghan' cameleers transported supplies, tools and equipment across inland Australia. Cameleers supported the Burke and Wills expedition, and the surveying and construction of the Overland Telegraph and the Trans-Australian Railway.
