April - ANZAC Day and 'the Age we're in'
As we approach
25 April—when we commemorate the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in 1915 and all Australians who fought and served—the broad reflection of the day brings to mind the many unique qualities of this experience.
The
'digger dialects', recognised by the First World War historian Charles Bean*, and compiled by the Australian War Memorial between 1921–1924, generated many slang terms that become a part of the Australian language.
Humour in war time was reflected in the new medium of the day—radio. While radio was adopted early on by ships, lighthouses and fire services, it was in broadcasting sound to the general public that radio had its biggest influence.
'Poignant, witty and revealing portraits of how we inhabit the age we're in'—throughout our lives—are presented this month through Force Majeure's dance, as well as poetry, multi-media, Indigenous and visual arts.
* Bean's work ANZAC to Amiens (1983 reprint) is now available online.
