Queensland Museum

Queensland Museum (QM) was founded by the Queensland Philosophical Society on 20 January 1862, and since that time it has maintained a proud record of service delivery to all Queenslanders. The Museum is known internationally for its excellence in research and collecting, particularly in the Natural Sciences.  Queensland Museum has responsibility for the state wide delivery of museum services, facilitated through a network of museums: Queensland Museum South Bank (Brisbane), The Museum of Tropical Queensland (Townsville), The Workshops Rail Museum (Ipswich), Cobb and Co. Museum (Toowoomba), Woodworks: the Forestry and Timber Museum (Gympie) and the Lands, Mapping and Surveying Museum (Woolloongabba, Brisbane).

Queensland Museum South Bank is the flagship campus of the Queensland Museum network. It is dedicated to telling a 'whole-of-Queensland' story, displaying iconic treasures of the State and engaging its audiences in a wide variety of public programs across the disciplines of Biodiversity, Geosciences, Cultures, History and Science. The Museum is located in Brisbane in the heart of a cultural centre that includes the Queensland Art Gallery, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the State Library and the new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. The cultural centre forms an integral part of 'South Bank', a vibrant mix of parkland, recreational and commercial spaces beside the Brisbane River. The Museum is a short walk from the CBD and is well served by public transport, being adjacent to the Cultural Centre Bus Station and South Brisbane Rail Station.

On 8th February 2006, Queensland Museum South Bank welcomed its 10 millionth visitor, and on October 2nd 2006 the Museum celebrates 20 years at South Bank.

Queensland Museum South Bank's exhibition galleries feature aspects of Queensland's environment, history and society. In addition, its public spaces include the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures Centre Dandiiri Maiwar, the Discover Queensland exhibition, the Sciencentre and the Inquiry Centre. The Museum regularly hosts national and international touring exhibitions, and is home to the Explorer Shop and a caf351.
