Gay & Lesbian Alliance of Museums Australia (GLAMA) Special Interest Group

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance of Museums Australia (GLAMA) is a Special Interest Group established to provide a vehicle by which to address the needs and interests of the range of individuals, groups and organisations which identify themselves broadly with what are termed variously the 'gay and lesbian' or 'glbt' communities.

In order to enhance its advocacy role in the museum sector, GLAMA in recent years has developed a document entitled 'Gay and Lesbian Policy Guidelines for Museum Programs and Practice', available for viewing on this website. This document addresses issues seen as of importance to the gay and lesbian community. It is hoped that those who work in museums, regardless of their sexuality, will refer to it, in order to inform their decision making regarding the range of activities undertaken within museums, from the management of human resources and collections, to education and training.

GLAMA presently has in progress a Database Project, in which gay- and lesbian-themed exhibitions and other programs from Australian museums, past and present, are being documented on an ongoing basis. If you have any information in this area, you are urged to contact us.

New members are always welcome, whether you are an individual or an organisation. GLAMA meets on at least an annual basis, to coincide with Museum Australia's Annual Conference, and a members' newsletter is also produced. Enquiries and comments are also invited at any time, as these provide us with the opportunity to enhance our role within the gay and lesbian and indeed wider communities.
