MA NSW SYMPOSIUM UPDATE NO 3
Renaissance, Reformation and Reinventing the Wheel
Alec Coles, CEO of Western Australian Museum, is among three keynote speakers who have joined the list of presenters in the Museums Australia (NSW) symposium Place, Space, and Identity: New Directions for NSW Museums, 18-19 April.
In his presentation, Renaissance, Reformation and Reinventing the Wheel: Seeking an Integrated Solution to Museum Provision, Alec will draw on his experiences in the UK and particularly the evolution, development of the Renaissance in the Regions program, to consider the relationships between national, state, regional and local museums; between public and private museums; between the volunteer and professional curators. How can these work best without turf-wars, duplication or jealousy? What are the structures that can enhance provision - and which get in the way? And as we invent and reinvent our structures, does anyone remember about the public?
Museums and multiculturalism
Professor Amareswar Galla, Chairperson of the ICOM Cross Cultural Task Force, Paris, and Director, Pacific Asia Observatory for Cultural Diversity in Human Development, UNESCO Project, in ‘End of Multiculturalism’ – Myth and Reality: Curatorship & Community Engagement at the Crossroads, will address the transformations of curatorship and community engagement in the complex environment of multiculturalism.
A National Indigenous Cultural Authority
And Terri Janke, Solicitor Director, Terri Janke and Company Pty Ltd, in Beyond Guarding Ground, will put forward a proposal for a National Indigenous Cultural Authority.
