A national accreditation scheme for Australian museums

Report by Jason George for Museums Australia, 2004.

Museum accreditation schemes are not new to Australia. In different forms systems have operated in South Australia, Victoria, and in Queensland. Plans are underway to establish a system in New South Wales. But what of a national scheme?

Museums Australia commissioned Jason George to research the potential for developing a national accreditation scheme for museums. Specifically his paper addresses three issues:

1. The role Museums Australia might play in a national accreditation scheme
2. The best model
3. The standards to be applied

The document is divided into four different documents to download as follows:

Section 1 - Introduction, Terminology and Role of Museums Australia

Section 2 - The Model

Section 3 - Draft Model Indicators, Conclusions and Recommendations

Section 4 - Appendices and Bibliography

The National Council is now working on the creation of national benchmarks as a first step towards the creation of national accreditation for the museums sector.
