Careers Centre

Museums and galleries are complex organisations and significant community resources. As custodians of cultural heritage, museums communicate information, ideas and insights to society, developing programs and services which stimulate public education and community interest. To fulfil these responsibilities, museums need staff with strong educational and vocational backgrounds and staff willing to understand the community’s needs from a variety of intellectual and cultural viewpoints. Such responsibilities require staff with a genuine interest and concern for people, staff in touch with contemporary issues, committed to access, participation and cultural equity.

For anyone aspiring to work in a museum there are a number of important questions to consider: what do I know about museums and their staff? What jobs exist? Are the employment prospects good? What does a curator, a director or a conservator do? Do I have a particular goal in mind? What qualifications are needed? These are the questions we hope to answer with the below tools.
