Museums are built on stories. Without stories a museum is just an odd assortment of objects. Stories, whether told through text panel, exhibition or guided tour, are what engages visitors to the histories that these objects tell. We all know a born storyteller, someone who can hold a whole room captive with their conversation or with a book that you just can’t put down. For others however, engaging people through stories is a skill that must be learned. Developed for the museum context, these two-day workshops will cover topics such as using a museum collection to create stories, how to structure narratives and performance techniques.

Ben Haggarty, one of the UKs leading storytellers and founder of the London based Crick Crack Club, will lead the workshop program. Ben is a much sought after trainer, director and storyteller and currently serves as the Professor of Storytelling at the Arts University of Berlin. With 30 years of experience working with museums and collections such as the British Museum, the Wellcome Collection, and the British Library - among others - the workshops are sure to be an engaging and invigorating start to 2019.

Themes explored in Day 1: an introduction to storytelling - the paradigm of oral retelling and practical approaches and skill building for staff as storytellers.

Themes explored in Day 2: - storytelling in museums - how stories and storytelling can be used in museums; looking at ways of identifying possible narratives and then looking at the practical side of storytelling in situ/galleries, storytelling in teaching spaces/lecture theatres, storytelling outreach with loan boxes, storytelling with slides
