Enriching our Lives - celebrating International Museum Day
Today is International Museum Day and in Australia we celebrate all the ways in which museums and galleries enrich our lives. Large or small, city or country, museums and galleries and the people who work in them, are at the heart of thriving communities.
Over the last several days in Brisbane, the annual conference, Museums and Galleries in their Cultural Landscapes, brought together a community of current and future leaders and decision-makers in museums, galleries and governments from Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region.
Alex Marsden, national director, says "museums and galleries are trusted world-wide as guardians of information, holding collections and creating knowledge. They take this responsibility seriously, while constantly looking for new ways to serve the community."
Museums and galleries are a vital part of Australia's innovation future as well as protecting and communicating our arts, stories, culture and heritage. She adds "celebrate, visit and support them, for they are as fundamental to our wellbeing as our relationships with each other."
Museums Galleries Australia is the national membership association and peak body that represents all sizes and types of museums and galleries, provides services and sets standards.
There are over 2,500 museums and galleries around Australia.
