Message from Frank Howarth, National President, Museums Galleries Australia

The National Council met in Brisbane on Saturday 13 May before the conference kicks off today. Over 500 delegates are coming to the conference and the program reflects the depth and breadth of the museum sector. This ranges from art museums to natural history museums, design museums to science centres, Indigenous Keeping Places and those organisations that maintain and communicate all types of cultural collections.

The National Council had a wide ranging discussion around how best to reflect the breadth of the sector in the organisation's name.

Council noted concern at State level in Victoria and New South Wales about the proposed formal name change, and in particular about potential confusion over the roles of State branches of MGA and other State art gallery representative bodies and service delivery bodies.

Therefore, National Council decided on the following action regarding the Resolution currently before the AGM to change the name of Museums Australia Inc to Museums Galleries Australia Inc.

In recognition of the value of wider consultation and discussion, the National Council resolves to:

  1. Further engage in discussion at state and territory level, and with members nationally,
  2. Work on a clearer value proposition and communicate this,
  3. Maintain the interim branding at national level, and
  4. Withdraw the motion at the present time.

The National Council looks forward to the consultative process over the coming year.
